George Wyllie’s unwavering passion for railway engines inspired him to create a collection of sculptural studies that beautifully capture the essence of locomotives. Each sculpture has its own unique character and charm, transporting us back to the days of steam-powered journeys and evoking a sense of nostalgia for that bygone era.

At Promontory Point highlights a pivotal moment in American history: the completion of the Transcontinental Railroad through the unification of the Union and Central Pacific Railroads at Promontory Summit, Utah, in May 1869.

Examine closely to find a gold bolt and a silver bolt, representing railroad spikes finished in gold and silver used in the ceremonial completion of the railroad.

Railway 200

In 1825 the Stockton & Darlington Railway opened in the North East of England – a journey that changed the world forever. In 2025 Railway 200 is commemorating this anniversary in a year-long celebration of the modern railway.

The railway has often inspired artists – to celebrate this enduring connection, Art UK and its museum partners have compiled a long list of 200 artworks featuring the UK railway.

The top 20 will be unveiled on World Art Day on 15th April and form a curated online exhibition until December 2025.
