Willie Sutherland presents new work inspired by the art and activism of George Wyllie, alongside original works by George Wyllie.
This timely jewel of an exhibition, presented during COP 26 invites us to question our treatment of the planet in this time of climate emergency.
Highly praised for his first solo exhibition, ‘Evolution of Wa’, at Glasgow’s CCA, self-taught artist and sculptor Willie Sutherland presents new sculptures and paintings based on a re-imaging of Wyllie’s work.
When talking about his work, Sutherland said Wyllie’s “humour and humanity” influenced him. From this, subsequent connection with the George Wyllie Estate gave the idea for this new collaborative exhibition.
The exhibition’s driving force is Wyllie’s Original Earth Guarantee, a deliberately verbose, yet comical, document decorated by Wyllie in the style of a retailer’s instructions for care of a product. The Guarantee sets out Wyllie’s manifesto on mankind’s duty of care for Planet Earth.
This exhibition by Willie Sutherland, in collaboration with the George Wyllie Estate, takes place in the lead up to the centenary of George Wyllie’s birth on 31 December 2021.
“It is fitting that George Wyllie’s legacy year ends in his beloved Inverclyde with an exhibition that examines our relationship with the planet we live on and questions just how we care for it. Fitting too, George has inspired another late-blooming up and coming artist Willie Sutherland, just as he was inspired by artists like Joseph Beuys, who linked artistic revolution and social revolution.” – Louise Wyllie
“Sutherland tightly grasps the handle of Wyllie’s trademark question takes aim and, like Wyllie, prods us to question our relationship with the planet.” – Lynne Mackenzie, Curator, George Wyllie Archive.
