GEORGE WYLLIE at the
SOCIETY OF SCOTTISH ARTISTS
123RD ANNUAL EXHIBITION
1 November – 23 November 2021
The Royal Scottish Academy, The Mound, Edinburgh EH2 2EL
George Wyllie was President of the Society of Scottish Artists from 1986-1989.
This year’s SSA Annual Exhibition will feature a selection of works generously loaned by the George Wyllie Estate.
The exhibition will feature George’s portable spire. From the mid-1980s, the concept of equilibrium began to weave its way through Wyllie’s work. He made and set up spires – tripod-like structures with a central balancing rod and a stone counterbalance. Much to the bewilderment of border staff, he’d often place this smaller, portable version in his luggage when travelling abroad.
Also, on show the ‘Equilibrium Spire’, alongside archive materials related to George’s 1988 Glasgow Berlin Spire.
The SSA Annual Exhibition will showcase artworks by members of Scotland’s largest artist-led organisation. The exhibition will show some of the most exciting work being made by the Society’s members and other selected artists, as well as bringing powerful international work to audiences in Edinburgh.
